  • 1 pound Italian sausage (mild or hot, casings removed) For added heat, use hot Italian sausage.
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • for garnish optional Fresh basil

Instructions

Cooking

  • Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  • Add the Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon, and cook until browned and cooked through.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes and dried oregano. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  • Toss the cooked pasta with the sausage and tomato sauce until well combined.
  • Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil if desired.

Notes

This dish is best served warm, right from the skillet. Pair it with a simple green salad and some crusty bread for a complete meal. To store any leftovers, let the pasta cool completely. Place it in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm it in a skillet over medium heat, adding a splash of water or broth if the sauce is too thick.
