  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Swiss) Can experiment with different cheeses like pepper jack or gouda.
  • 1 large onion, sliced Caramelize slowly for best flavor.
  • 4 slices rye bread Sourdough or whole wheat can be used as alternatives.
  • 4 tablespoons butter For spreading on bread and cooking.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Season the patties before cooking.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Form the ground beef into two patties and season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook the patties in a skillet over medium heat until browned and cooked through, about 4 minutes per side.
  • While the patties cook, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in another pan and add the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized.

Assembly

  • Once the patties are cooked, place cheese on top of each patty and cover until melted.
  • On one side of each slice of rye bread, spread butter. Place one slice, butter side down, in the skillet.
  • Add the patty with melted cheese and some caramelized onions. Top with another slice of bread, butter side up.
  • Cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, then flip and cook the other side.
  • Repeat with remaining ingredients to make another sandwich.

Notes

Serve hot with a side of crispy French fries or a simple green salad. Add a dollop of ketchup, mustard, or a spicy sauce for extra flavor. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
