Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter (softened) Use room temperature butter for better mixing.
  • ¾ cup brown sugar (packed)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour You can substitute some for whole wheat flour for a healthier option.
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

Mix-ins

  • 1 cup chocolate chips You can substitute semisweet chocolate chips with dark or milk chocolate.
  • ¾ cup maraschino cherries (chopped and patted dry) You can use fresh cherries; just ensure to pit and chop them.
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional) Feel free to leave them out for a nut-free cookie.

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, beat softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy.
  • Mix in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until well combined.
  • Stir in chocolate chips and chopped cherries, plus walnuts if using.
  • Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.

Baking

  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are golden brown around the edges.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes

Cookies can be served warm with milk or ice cream. You can sprinkle powdered sugar on top or serve them with a cherry on a toothpick. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days at room temperature, or freeze for up to 3 months.
