  • 4 large large onions, sliced Use sweet or red onions for added flavor.
  • ½ cup butter Melted in a skillet.
  • ¼ cup brown sugar Adjust to control sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional) Adds extra flavor.

Cooking

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and stir to coat them with the butter.
  • Sprinkle the brown sugar, salt, and black pepper over the onions.
  • Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.
  • If using, drizzle balsamic vinegar over the onions in the last minute of cooking for extra flavor.
  • Remove from heat and serve warm.

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in a skillet over low heat or in a microwave. For a richer flavor, consider adding minced garlic midway through cooking. To make it spicier, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce.
