Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 egg for egg wash (optional) Use for a shiny finish if desired.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add olive oil and salt to the yeast mixture.
  • Gradually add flour, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a roll.
  • Place rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If desired, brush with egg wash for a shiny finish.
  • Let rolls rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let cool before slicing and filling with your favorite sandwich ingredients.

Notes

Store leftover hoagie rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you want to keep them longer, freeze them. Wrap each roll in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Use a kitchen scale for more precise measurements of flour. Let the dough rise in a warm place to help it double in size faster. Experiment with different flours for a unique flavor, such as whole wheat or bread flour.
