Beef and Batter Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef, sliced into strips Use your preferred cut of beef
  • 1 cup cornstarch For coating the beef
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ½ cup water To achieve the desired batter consistency
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce Adjust for desired spiciness
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 stalks green onions, chopped For garnish
  • as needed Oil for frying Use a neutral oil with a high smoke point

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix the cornstarch, egg, and water to create a batter. Dip the beef strips into the batter.
  • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

Cooking

  • Once the oil is hot, fry the beef strips until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • In another pan, combine soy sauce, chili sauce, sugar, vinegar, and garlic. Bring to a simmer.
  • Add the crispy beef to the sauce and toss to combine.

Serving

  • Garnish with green onions and serve hot.

Notes

Serve immediately for the best crunch. Pair with steamed rice or fried rice. For leftovers, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in a hot pan to regain some crunch. For a healthier version, consider baking the coated beef strips at 400°F (200°C).
